Do you dream in the 1st person or 3rd?

The alarm woke me up this morning, interrupting a dream in the 3rd person. This was unusual as most of mine are dreamt in the 1st. The dream was definitely about me and my family, but with some unexpected casting and location choices being that we’ve no connection to Appalachia in general or West Virginia in particular.

What did I dream about? It involved some unsavory uses of kitchen cutlery. But I’m curious, why the switch in point of view? Is it that if a dream is too terrible, the unconscious switches the dream to the 3rd person as an effort to protect itself? What do you dream in? First person or 3rd?

About Robert Moss

I write ads: traditional, non-traditional, interactive, edutainment, story-based, broadcast, and experiential marketing events. Sometimes I write about ads and the business of advertising. Sometimes I write about other stuff. The views expressed here are solely my own and don't reflect the views of my employers. I also published a novel called Descending Memphis that's getting great reviews on Amazon. see
